"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under the influence of Paxil........indivisible with liberty and justice for all."
I am becoming alarmed at the number of people who are on Paxil. This is not according to a scientific poll, or Psychology Today. This is according to Ruby. Whether the social scientists believe it or not, bartenders and hairdressers are on the front lines of mental health in this country and that's because:
1. People will not admit they need help.
2. Stigma
3. Cost
4. They don't realize they can actually get help.
5. Stigma
Pollsters sample a cross section of society to come up with their numbers. I talk to people from all walks of life in my community everyday, and there's an awful lot of people on Paxil. Wasn't it just yesterday that we were a Prozac nation? My mind envisions Caribbean beaches littered with the tanned bodies of pharmaceutical reps who've won a weeks vacation in a sales contest.
We're in a rural area here, and the closest psychologist is probably 75 miles away. Besides, the awareness that you can actually use a psychologist is more like a million miles away. So people show up in the bar everyday, I call them "emotional bulemics". They gorge themselves all day long on bad behavior, bad relationships and bad decisions. Add to the mix images of dead Russian school kids and you've got a mess. They walk into the bar, order a drink and proceed to stick their fingers down their throats and gag up all their pain.
Kimberly over at the Cut & Curl is the counties foremost marriage counselor. Everybody knows that.
What I'm getting at is this - I've heard that Paxil is fantastic, and that's a good thing. Back when I had my nervous breakdown the psychotropic drugs were not effective. But Paxil can only calm the waters, so to speak.
Doc Hogan is writing those prescriptions, and although he's good at the treatment of our everyday ills, I'm not comfortable with him dispensing psych meds. Just because Tammy says she's depressed doesn't mean she's suffering from depression, there is a distinction.
I'm not comfortable being the pop psychologist/bartender/confidant, even though I spent 4 1/2 years in psychotherapy myself. People are always surprised to learn that, and one of the customers asked me what that cost. Let's see.....$20 an hour (my co-pay) X 50 weeks a year X 4.5 years = $4,500. That's the price of a halfway decent used Chevy.
I know one thing for sure - it's the best money I ever spent...EVER. It gave me more than $10 grand in plastic surgery. I paid my money and I paid attention.
And everyone knows my story. I'll tell anyone who will listen because the STIGMA is the thing that pisses me off.
So do me a favor, if you're one of the Paxilated Populace, do more than just take the medication...take the cure......you'll find it in a nice comfy paisley chair in a psychologists office, not in a bar and grill.

May I add one to your list?
6. People who admit they need help that are too drugged up on meds to get their arse into therapy!
I think Doc Hogan is writing way too many scripts these days. As far as I knew, meds were supposed to be one tool of many needed. Nowadays, seems like people think it's the end all and the be all.
I came to hear about this med(Paxil) 3 years ago when my sis went on it. For some screwball reason she takes a Zoloft a day as well. Go figure. Back then, when I was dealing with a sis that was depressed because she was in a loveless marriage, transferred that need for love to her kids, changing the dynamics from parent to "friend" and thusly became a fulltime slave/martyr, I had a fighting chance to lend an ear and give her some well thought out advice. After assuring her all would be okay again if she makes a plan and follows a plan, I offered my 2 cents. I advised her that meds are okay for some but for all they are only one tool. That it was imperative that she eat right, get her rest, get into therapy, read as much as she could on the subject and to be true to herself. Now, sadly after 3 years on meds only, in a worse state of mind...numb really, she is looking at surgery to get a pre-cancerous polyp removed.
Over the past 3 years our conversations have diminished and resorted to mostly chit-chat. Oh, I still get in there and fight for what I think is right from time to time but afterall, I'm dealing with the Paxil/Zoloft numb effect.
Of course I've been in contact with her lately due to her surgery. She told me she was mad at her regular doc because she used the "C" word during her pre-surgery physical exam. In addition, her doc told her that her problem was too much pent up anger. Before I had a chane to say I agree with her doc, she quickly said: "But let's not get into that."
"Nope, let's not get into ANYTHING", I thought. Let's keep on taking meds, feeling numb for the rest of your life. Let's pretend everything is nail in life cause all you got in your tool box is a hammer.
